Therapeutic Massage

The roots of massage lie over 5000 years ago when it began as a sacred system of healing. Massage was used to help heal and prevent injuries, relieve pain, reduce stress and produce deep relaxation.

Therapeutic massage is recognised as a valuable part of complementary medicine, informed by science and development of techniques over thousands of years.

Therapeutic massage aims to help heal physical, psychological and emotional wellbeing, enabling others to enjoy a better quality of life.

Massage is a gentle, soothing and comforting therapy which can induce deep relaxation and allow time away from busy and demanding stresses and strains of everyday life. It is important for us all to find time and space each day to relax and to redirect our focus away from our pressures to something different and pleasant. Receiving a massage creates the perfect environment for this, allowing our tensions to melt away…

Along with being a nourishing relaxing treat, holistic therapeutic massage helps to improve the function of the whole body and its systems, thereby promoting a multitude of physiological benefits and can bring a significant positive impact on health and wellbeing for people experiencing a wide spectrum of conditions.

I have a wealth of experience of applying remedial and nurturing massage to persons living with a variety of conditions i.e. post-stroke impairments, mild and profound learning and physical disabilities, mental health issues, Dementia, cancer and palliative patients and their carers’, ME, post strenuous training, post strenuous gardening, occasionally children, and more!

Here are some of the physical, Emotional and Psychological benefits of therapeutic massage:

  • Muscular System – improves function and blood flow, decreases pain, tension, spasm
  • Musculo-skeletal System – improves posture and range of movement, decreases pain
  • Circulatory System – improves blood circulation to all tissues, oxygen and nutrient absorption, elimination of waste and lactic acid
  • Body – Mind Connection – promotes self-healing, self-worth, body confidence, self-awareness, emotional release (cellular memory), improved energy levels
  • Nervous System – improves relaxation, sleep, decreases stress
  • Digestive System – improves absorption of nutrients, secretion of gastric juices, sphincter function
  • Lymphatic System – improves Lymph drainage, Systemic function, immunity (by promoting white blood cell count), decreases illness

Approach

I am fully trained and insured, and hold a full membership with the APNT (Association of Physical and Natural Therapies) and the BCMA (British Complementary Medicine Association). I hold a certificate in First Aid in the Workplace and undertake regular Continuing Professional Development.

I ordinarily practice from my home in Sandford or the Crediton Natural Therapy Centre on the High Street, and can hire practice rooms in Exeter if more convenient. I am a non-driver, so home visits are limited unless reasonably practicable, and I do welcome requests from local residential and nursing homes.

My work with clients is confidential and subject to the requirements of law and professional guidance.
There may be occasions where a GP or consultant’s endorsement is required prior to proceeding with treatment.
